College Readiness
Black History Month On Pinterest
For over a year I've been working very hard to maintain a Black History Month board on Pinterest. Normally I provide my teachers with a handy Black History Month Pathfinder, but I thought I would kick it up a notch. So far, my teachers really enjoy using this resource along with the district's African-American Studies Curriculum.
Personally, this has been a really facinating experience for me as I have learned so much while adding content to the board. As a result of the Black History board, I created a Black History Firsts board that celebrates the many groundbreaking achievements of African-Americans.
You can follow the board two ways:

Pinterest & College Readiness
One of the main highlights of the board will be to provide suggestions on to how to finance college. Looking back, members of the Class of 2014 were really on the ball. Throughout the school year, the students submitted several scholarship applications/letters to organizations and businesses across the country. As a class, they were awarded 2.3 million dollars in scholarship dollars. The teachers and staff are so proud of these students. Several of my students who were admitted into multiple schools, just did not have the financial means for school. The money earned through these scholarships assisted them in making college a reality. As a staff, our goal is the raise the bar and support the Class of 2015 in raising more money than their predecessors did. I debuted the College Readiness board to a group of seniors yesterday and they generally enjoyed the articles. Check back with us from time to time to see how we are progressing.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK @CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY
First, it provides students, teachers, community and interested stakeholders with a portal for information about events taking place at Phillips. Academically, the boards have served as a teaching tool during Black History Month, Women's History Month and Poetry Month. Students and teachers are able to access organized links to articles, pictures and videos are a variety of subjects. Through our history board, visitors of Wendell Phillips Academy High School are able to learn more about our illustrious history within the Bronzeville community and contributions to the city of Chicago. Lastly, the boards support all things positive at Phillips high school!
